In Loja, Ecuador, a city of 200,000 people, the butterfly Catasticta truncata thrives in greater numbers than nearby wild areas. It lays its eggs on a mistletoe that parasitizes a willow tree found throughout the city, and an entomologist who has studied the rare butterfly says it could be a "flagship" species for promoting conservation in Loja and the surrounding region.
