Growers can fend off western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera) with Bt corn and soil-applied insecticides—but only for the short term. A new study finds this combo will likely lead to rapid evolution of resistance in rootworms, and researchers recommend crop rotation, refuges, and alternating seasonal use of Bt and soil-applied insecticides to slow down resistance development.
