On Wednesday, Sept. 30, Providence Business Journal will host a virtual awards ceremony that ranks its announced list of “2020 Best Places to Work” in the Providence, R.I., market.
Among the finalists is Big Blue Bug Solutions. “It was a very in-depth process where a majority of our employees filled out a comprehensive and lengthy survey,” CEO Brian Goldman tells Pest Management Professional magazine. “The fact that our employees felt this way about our company, especially during a pandemic, has everyone elated.”
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Started in 1935 by Leonard Yale Goldman as the New England Exterminating and Fumigating Co., Big Blue Bug Solutions has grown from a small, local business to one of the largest pest control companies in New England. President Stephan Goldman, son of the founder, continues the tradition and has been joined by his sons Scott and Brian.
This isn’t the first award garnered by the company in recent years. Other accolades include being named one of the top pest control company in Central Massachusetts in 2016 by the Telegram & Gazette, Worcester, Mass.; and taking first place in the category of “Best Pest Control in Rhode Island” by the Providence Journal in both 2017 and 2018.
From 1950 to 2012, the company was known as New England Pest Control. But in 1980, it made a claim to fame by erecting “the Big Blue Bug” on top of its headquarters. The bug, named Nibbles Woodaway thanks to a local radio contest, appears in the 1994 film “Dumb and Dumber” and its 2014 sequel, “Dumb and Dumber To.”
For the past three decades, Nibbles has lit up for the holidays. The replica Eastern subterranean termite (Reticulitermes flavipes), who clocks in at 58 feet long, 9 feet tall and 4,000 pounds, also currently wears a mask to remind drivers on I-95 to keep safe during the pandemic.
